This breed has a high fertility rate and adaptability of climate which will be beneficial for cattle herders

The state’s first goat breeding sub-centre established at the Gauthan of Durg district

After the status of Rojgar gudi(RIPA) was given to Gauthans, different types of new enterprises are being commenced here. Through the initiative of establishing the state’s first advanced goat breeding sub-centre in Durg’s Gauthan, another income generating activity is being commenced in this Gauthan to increase the income of farmers and cattle herders. With this, the production and breeding of Osmanabadi goats will also be done in Gauthans and district administration and Kamdhenu University are jointly implementing this new initiative.

According to the intention of Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel,various works are being done to increase the income of farmers and to connect them with agriculture and its allied activities.

It may be noted that 4 lakh cattle herders are associated with goat rearing in the state and the Animal Husbandry Department is working to provide new facilities for goat rearing of advanced breeds to help these cattle herders increase their income.

Dr. Dakshinkar, Vice-Chancellor of Kamdhenu University, informed about the advantages of rearing Osmanabadi goats, he said that the twining rate of Osmanabadi goats, that is, the ability to give two kids is about 47 percent and the climate of this area is also favorable for them. Their disease resistance is very good.

If raised properly, they grow at a rapid pace. He further said that due to the high fertility of these goats, the cattle herders will get more income from rearing Osmanabadi goats.

To promote the rearing of goats of advanced breed in Durg district, a breeding center for Osmanabadi breed has been set up at Kamdhenu University. To increase the popularity of this breed in rural areas, a breeding sub-centre has been set up at Kurmigundra Gothan as well. The first consignment of 25 female Osmanabadi goats and a unit of 2 male goats have been sent here. Here the Gauthan committee will learn the work of breeding goats as well as rearing them. For this, the Animal Husbandry Department will jointly provide technical assistance with Kamdhenu University .

With the establishment of a breeding sub-centre at Kurmikandra Gothan, Osmanabadi goats of advanced breed will now be available to the rural cattle herders for goat rearing in their village itself,. Earlier this breed had to be imported from outside which proved to be expensive, but now goats of this breed will be easily available in the breeding center and sub-centre in the university. Experts related to goat rearing told that numerous different types of species are suitable in different districts of Chhattisgarh. For example, Black Bengal is suitable for Surguja , Similarly, Osmanabadi is quite suitable for the environment of Durg district.
It is worth mentioning that according to a report by NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information),In osmanabadi goats, the rate of giving birth to one kid is 61.96 percent, the rate of giving birth to two kids is 37.03 percent and the rate of giving birth to three kids is 1.01 percent. In this context, Osmanabadi goats will prove to be very useful for many goat farmers from the point of view of qualitative growth.
